How to compare small loans

Look at the full cost, repayment schedule and available support before choosing a loan.

  1. Compare like for like

Compare the same amount borrowed over the same repayment period. A lower weekly or monthly payment does not necessarily mean a cheaper loan, particularly if you are paying it back for longer.

  2. Check the total cost

Look at the total amount repayable, including interest and any fees, alongside the APR. The total repayable shows what you would pay back in pounds, while APR expresses the borrowing cost as an annual rate.

  3. Consider your budget

Check that repayments fit alongside essential bills and existing commitments. Consider both the regular payment and how long you would need to keep making it.

  4. Check the terms and available help

Find out how payments are made, whether missed payments attract charges, what happens if you repay early, and how to contact the lender if you need support.
